Groom's Cake Cost

How Much Does a Groom's Cake Cost?

low costStandard Sheet Cake: $0.80-$1.50 a Sliceaverage costMulti-Tiered Stacked Cake: $2-$6 a Slicehigh costThree-Dimensional Cake: $5-$10+ a Slice

A Southern tradition that has spread to other regions, the groom's cake usually has a design or shape that reflects his interests. It can be served as dessert at the rehearsal dinner or displayed with the wedding cake during the reception. The bride and groom may pick out the groom's cake together, or the bride may order it as a surprise.

Typical costs:

  • Costs for a groom's cake are similar to those for wedding cakes, ranging from $1-$2 or less per slice for a relatively straightforward single-tier or sheet cake, to $8-$10 or more a slice for elaborate cakes with fondant, gum paste and sugar decorations or fruit. For example, at NYCWeddings.com, a bride reports three quotes for a NASCAR-inspired cake[1] : $50 for a small round cake iced with the NASCAR logo or a picture of a car; $260 for a sheet cake in the shape of a car with details drawn on top; or $590 for an elaborately detailed three-dimensional race car. Prices also vary depending on whether the cake will be cut into reception slices, which are usually served near the end of the event (when some guests have already left) or served as dessert, requiring larger slices.
  • A standard rectangular, square or round single-tier or sheet cake in basic flavors like chocolate or vanilla typically costs about $0.80-$1.50 a slice, or $50-$150 to serve 60-100 guests. These cakes can have simple designs added with icing or may have slightly three-dimensional additions that enhance the design. For example, at Sweet Promises Wedding Cakes[2] in North Carolina a sheet cake topped with the raised image of a football serves about 70 people and costs $60 (about $0.86 a slice) while a single-tier round cake with a championship logo design that serves 45 people or so costs $55 (about $1.23 per serving).
  • A relatively simple three-dimensional cake or a multi-tiered stacked cake with other than the standard flavors or designs typically costs $2-$6 a slice, depending on complexity and local rates, or $120-$600 for 60-100 guests. For example, at Cooper Street Bakery[3] in Texas, a stacked cake with 14" and 10" tiers covered with chocolate-dipped strawberries (in season) serves 90-100 people and costs $241, or $2.41-$2.68 per slice; nuts, chocolate shavings, special fillings or flavors like black forest, Italian cream or carrot each add $10-$30 or more to the total cost.
  • Three-dimensional groom's cakes can be sculpted in the shape of a golf course, cowboy boot, football helmet, hamburger, pickup truck and more. These elaborately whimsical creations with specialty flavors or fillings, covered with fondant (which gives the cake with a smooth, satiny shell) and using edible decorations made of fondant, gum paste or sugar can cost $5-$10 or more a slice, or $300-$1,000 or more for 60-100 guests, depending on complexity and local rates. For example, The Cake Guys in Texas estimate their three-dimensional specialty cakes typically cost $200-$600.

What should be included:
  • Often the flavor and colors of a groom's cake are selected to contrast with the wedding cake. Dark chocolate is a common choice.
Additional costs:
  • There may be a delivery charge of $30-$100 or more, depending on distance and local rates -- but if the groom's cake is delivered at the same time and to the same place as the wedding cake, a single delivery charge may cover both cakes.
  • There can be a $50-$150 deposit required to book the delivery date for the groom's cake.
Shopping for a groom's cake:
  • Groom's cakes are typically sold by bakeries that make wedding cakes. Search the Independent Bakeries[4] directory for cake shops by city and state.
  • Taste samples from several bakers before deciding which one to hire. Most offer a free consultation and tasting, although some charge a small fee. Ask to see a portfolio; request (and contact) references.
  • Decide on a theme for the groom's cake. For ideas, explore the photo galleries posted by Austin Cake Lady[5] , The Cake Guys, Cakes by Sam[6] , Carrie's Cakes[7] and The Sweetest Day[8] .
  • A bakery can only create and deliver a limited number of cakes on a specific day. A groom's cake usually needs to be ordered well in advance. Carrie's Cakes[9] in Utah estimates that it generally reserves cake dates two to three months before the delivery date. The months of May, June and August fill up quickly.
